Developing AI applications is only part of the challenge for financial institutions. Evaluating their performance, monitoring their behavior, and maintaining appropriate controls are equally important, particularly when those systems operate in highly regulated environments.
These are areas Akash Nikam works on directly as Head of AI Products and Engineering at Vanguard. This December, he will join the 2026 U.S. BankTech Summit as a panelist discussing the practical applications, opportunities, and risks of generative AI in financial services.
As part of Vanguard’s AI Center of Excellence, Akash leads teams responsible for building platforms that evaluate, monitor, and oversee AI systems across the enterprise. Their work includes LLM-as-a-judge evaluation for conversational AI agents, post-production oversight tools, small language model development, and real-time controls for AI applications.
Akash also works closely with Vanguard’s AI risk and governance teams to establish approaches that support trustworthy AI deployment at scale. His work connects the technical requirements of developing AI systems with the oversight and risk management considerations that financial institutions must address before and after implementation.
Since joining Vanguard in 2022, Akash has held senior machine learning roles, including work involving enterprise security and fraud. Earlier in his career, he conducted applied machine learning research with Marshall University and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center.
We are pleased to welcome Akash to the U.S. BankTech Summit speaker lineup. His experience developing enterprise AI evaluation and monitoring capabilities will add an important perspective to a discussion about where generative AI is delivering value and where institutions need to proceed carefully.
Akash will participate in the panel discussion, “Generative AI in Action: Productivity, Risk, and Personalization.”
The session will examine how financial institutions are applying generative AI across operations, compliance, and customer experience. Panelists will discuss use cases involving fraud detection, service automation, and product design, with an emphasis on understanding which applications are producing measurable results.
The conversation will also address the risks and implementation challenges that accompany AI adoption. As institutions expand their use of generative AI, questions surrounding accuracy, oversight, governance, and operational reliability remain central to responsible deployment.
Akash’s experience building AI evaluation frameworks and enterprise oversight tools will contribute a practical perspective on how organizations can assess AI performance, manage risk, and support broader adoption.
We look forward to welcoming Akash Nikam to the 2026 U.S. BankTech Summit and hearing his insights alongside other technology and financial services leaders.
